Abstract

The phylogenetic relationship among birdwing butterflies, including some species in most genera of the tribe Troidini, was investigated using nucleotide sequences of the ND5 gene obtained from mitochondrial DNA. Species of the genera Ornithoptera and Troides in the study were shown to be closely related. Species of the subgenus Ornithoptera also displayed a very close relationship, as well as species of the subgenus Schoenbergia. The genera Pachliopta and Losaria, as well as Atrophaneura and Byasa, were suggested to be closely related. On the other hand, Battus is excluded from the Troidini phylogenetically. the common ancestor of Ornithoptera and Troides was supposed to have evolved either in the region that includes Australia and New Guinea Island, or in a part of South-east Asia, and diverged into the two genera before or after the time when fragments of Gondwanaland collided against Asia.
